On 1st February 2018, Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has announced the National Health Protection Scheme under the Budget 2018. It is the largest government-funded healthcare programme that covers 5 lakh per family per year for 50 crore people across India.

Mr. Jaitley has plans on making health and wellness centers that provide health services to poor or below poverty line (BPL) families.

These centers will make healthcare closer to home. Centers will be approximately 1.5 lakh in number, that will provide free essential drugs and diagnostic services. The Indian government has allocated a sum of  ₹ 1200 crore for this. Source: TheHindu

The healthcare budget is the world’s biggest health protection scheme by size but, not budget. It will raise health cover by up to 17 times from the existing healthcare budget Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) offered by the government in 2017.
