The 13th of August is celebrated every year as a World Organ Donation Day. The purpose of the celebration is clear: to promote organ donation for those who need it. Only in India, thousands of people die every year due to the failure of their organs. These people could experience a new day if only people with healthy organs could move forward and donate their organs. Many organs can be given after death.

The donated organs can change the lives of thousands of needy people around the world. World Organ Donor Day 2018 highlights the need for organ donation across the country and the need to raise awareness of these issues. The main goal is to eliminate the taboo surrounding organ donation.

Things No One Told You About World Organ Donation Day

Organ donation is a process by which an organ is transferred from the body of the organ (donor) to the organ that needs the organ (the recipient).

The donor may be alive or dead. The organs that can be given are the kidneys, lungs, heart, eyes, liver, pancreas, cornea, small intestine, skin tissue, bone tissue, heart valves and veins. There are two types of organ donation: living donation and body or the gift of the deceased.

The live donation is done with a healthy and living person. The organs that can be given by a living person are the kidneys and the liver. In fact, a donor can survive on a single kidney and eventually repress the liver to its normal size.

Meanwhile, the body donation is performed with the help of a person who is dead in terms of breath loss and dysfunction. The idea behind the World Organ Donor Day is to make the body donation known.

What is the Relation Between Brain Death and World Organ Donation Day?

Doctors explain brain death when there is an irreversible loss of consciousness and a lack of reflex in our brainstem. But even after someone has been declared brain dead, organs can be kept alive by artificial technology.

So if someone dies at home or elsewhere rather than in the hospital, his organs cannot be donated. Vital organs can only be given if death occurs in the hospital. In cases where the subject has suffered cardiac death, the organs may include the cornea, bones, ligaments, veins, heart valves, blood and platelets, and blood stem cells.

What are the Organs That Can Be Donated?

1. Kidney

The kidneys are the most commonly donated organs and are the most requested. A transplanted kidney has a lifespan of nine years. Since humans can even survive on a kidney, donating organs will not pose a serious threat to the donor’s life.

2. Heart

Although heart transplants are becoming common day after day, a heart can survive only four hours outside the body of the donor.

3. Liver

It is interesting to note that a fully functioning liver can be divided into two parts and some of them can be given to someone who needs them. The other part of the donor part will eventually become the size of a normal liver. Liver transplants are important because the liver is a vitamin storage bank and an important organ for removing blood waste.

4. Lungs

Living donors can only donate one lung, while deceased donors can provide both lungs. Lung damage can lead to serious breathing problems and death. Therefore, it is advisable for people with a damaged lung to look for a lung donation, and for those with a healthy lung, a donation request can be extended.

5. Intestine

A good donation is rare, but it can be done well. The donation can be used live and a living person can donate part of their intestines.

6. Bones and veins

Yes, even bones and veins can be donated! The cancerous bones of the receptors can be exchanged with donated healthy bones. The veins given can be used in cardiac bypass surgery.

People who are strictly limited to giving an organ are those who have cancer, HIV, or bacteria in their blood that can cause disease. In addition to these individuals, anyone in good health can follow a donation.

7. Pancreas

A living person can donate part of the pancreas because the pancreas is an organ that regains functionality over time.

You might think this normal but for someone, it’s a very precious thing because his/her life will depend upon your one decision.
