World Toilet Day celebrated every year on 19th November in order to spread awareness and inspire people regarding the importance of having toilets in a home that can save lives because human waste spreads killer diseases. Every country in the world is taking steps to ensure availability and sustainable management of sanitation and water for all by 2030. Today, several million people still practice open defecation which is harmful to them and others as well.

The impact of exposure to human feces on this larger scale has a devastating impact on public health, nutrition, living and working conditions, education, and economic productivity across the world.

This year, the World Toilet Day 2018 theme is “When Nature Calls.“

On the occasion of the World Toilet Day 2018, WaterAid, Sanitation for the Urban Poor, and United Nations International Children’s Fund have jointly launched a guide to building female-friendly toilets as well as for providing basic hygiene and sanitation to women and girls.

According to the United Nations, the number of people who open defecation in the world is about 89.2 million. There is half the stake in India. However, to deal with this problem, the Government of India has started Swachh Bharat Abhiyan under which it has already made about nine crore toilets in rural areas. The government is moving ahead with the goal of completely eliminating defecation till 2019.

In a statement, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi states that “A clean India would be the best tribute India could pay to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150 birth anniversary in 2019,” during the launch of the Swachh Bharat Mission. The Mission was launched throughout the country as a national movement.

Where Does India Stand on the Toilet’s Cleanliness And Hygiene?

Keeping in mind the occasion of the World Toilet Day, not only the Indian Government has taken steps but apart from this several states governments have also taken the initiatives for toilet’s cleanliness and hygiene.

This year, the UP’s district Kaushambi has seen the inauguration of pink toilets that will be constructed in all the police stations across the district. The toilet will have facilities like sanitary napkin vending machines and incinerators for menstrual hygiene among policewomen.

Not only in the UP, but Delhi also launches its first ‘Pink Toilet’ with sanitary napkin vending machine and incinerator. This one-of-its-kind facility is an important step towards the hygienic public restrooms for children and women. To help women, this toilet is equipped with a sanitary napkin vending machine and also a feeding room for breastfeeding mothers.
