World Autism Acceptance Day is an international event which is recognized on April 2 every year, for encouraging the Member States of the United Nations to take steps to raise acceptance about people with autism throughout the world.

 

The day (02 April) was designated by the United Nations General Assembly resolution “62/139. World Autism Acceptance Day”, which was passed in council on November 1, 2007, and adopted on December 18, 2007.

The World Autism Awareness Day is also one of only four official health-specific United Nations Days. On this day several individual autism organizations come together all around the world to aid in things like studies or research, diagnoses, treatment, and overall acceptance of people with autism or with this neurological variance.

 

On the World Autism Awareness Day, there are several autism-friendly events and educational activities that take place all month to increase the understanding and acceptance and worldwide support.

 

This year theme for World Autism Acceptance Day is “Empowering Women and Girls with Autism” focus on the importance of empowering women and girls with autism and involving them with organizations in policy and decision making to address these challenges.

 

Girls with disabilities are less likely to complete primary education and more likely to be denied access to education. With this low rate of education, women with disabilities also have a lower rate of employment than men with this disabilities and women without disabilities.

 

Globally, women are more likely to experience sexual, physical, economic, and psychological violence than men, And girls and women with disabilities are more likely to suffer gender-based violence at higher rates and in unique forms owing to discrimination and stigma based on both disability and gender.
