What are a Liver and Kidney Transplant?
It is the surgical method of replacing a damaged liver or a damaged kidney, or in this case both, with a healthy liver from another person. It is a treatment option for end-stage liver and kidney diseases and acute liver or kidney failure, although the availability of donor organs is a major limitation as well.
Liver transplant and kidney transplant are surgical treatments for people with liver and kidney failure, whose condition can’t be managed with treatments or in the case of cancer. Liver failure can happen quickly or over a longer period of time.
Liver failure that appears in a matter of weeks is called acute liver failure and is usually the result of medication-induced liver injury. A liver transplant may treat acute liver failure but it is more often used to treat chronic liver failure. Long term liver failure happens slowly over time.
Acute kidney failure occurs when the kidneys suddenly become unable to filter waste products from the blood. When the kidneys lose their filtering ability, dangerous levels of wastes may accumulate, and the blood’s chemical makeup may get out of balance.
Acute kidney failure also called acute renal failure or acute kidney injury — develops rapidly, usually in less than a few days. Acute kidney failure is most common in people who are already hospitalized, particularly in critically ill people who need intensive care.
Acute kidney failure can be fatal and requires intensive treatment. However, acute kidney failure may be reversible. If the patient is otherwise in good health, they may recover normal or nearly normal kidney function.

What Can Cause the Need For A Liver Transplant or A Kidney Transplant?
Long-term liver failure can be caused by a variety of problems or conditions.
- Hepatitis B and C
- Alcoholic liver disease
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- Genetic diseases that affect the liver
Diseases that affect the tubes that carry bile away from the liver, or the bile ducts. Biliary atresia is one such disease that is a very common reason for liver transplant among children.
In the case of kidneys, kidney failure is the last and most severe stage of chronic kidney disease. This is why kidney failure is also called end-stage renal disease or ESRD for short. Diabetes is the most common cause of ESRD. High blood pressure is the second most common cause of ESRD. Other problems that can cause kidney failure include:
- Autoimmune diseases
- Genetic diseases
- Nephrotic syndrome
- Urinary tract problems
At times, the kidneys can stop working very suddenly. This type of kidney failure is called acute kidney injury or acute renal failure. Common causes of acute renal failure include:
- Heart attack
- Illegal drug use and drug abuse
- Not enough blood flow to the kidneys
- Urinary tract problems
The Revolutionary Combined Liver and Kidney Transplant
In the case of the 35-year-old man, he had a medical history of renal failure, chronic liver problem and fatty liver, which necessitated an urgent need for kidney and liver transplant.
Doctors in Delhi decided to defer the transplant as the patient also had a cardiac shock and low blood pressure. So, the family brought the man down to Chennai. It was challenging to do a transplant as the patient had multiple complications and was also obese (130 kg).
The patient’s wife and sister came forward to donate their liver and kidney and after post-surgery success, the man was discharged 16 days after surgery. All members involved walked out of the surgery in perfect health.
