As the global spread of mpox (previously known as monkeypox) continues to increase, driven by a fast-emerging strain, the World Health Organization (WHO) has taken a crucial step by approving the first-ever diagnostic test for mpox. This move offers renewed hope for countries struggling with mpox outbreaks, particularly in regions where the virus had not been previously observed.

On Thursday, the WHO granted emergency use authorization for a diagnostic test developed by Abbott Laboratories. This test is expected to significantly improve testing capabilities in areas affected by mpox. In an official statement, the UN health agency said, “The emergency approval of the Alinity m MPXV assay, produced by Abbott Molecular Inc., will play a key role in expanding diagnostic capacity in countries dealing with mpox outbreaks, where the demand for rapid and accurate testing has surged.

How does this diagnostic test function?

The test works by detecting the mpox virus using nucleic acid amplification techniques, such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR). For confirming mpox infection, the preferred specimen is lesion material. The test identifies the virus from skin lesion swabs and is designed to be used by laboratory personnel trained in PCR techniques and in vitro diagnostic (IVD) procedures.

Important Signs and Symptoms:

• fever: High temperatures are one of the first signs of monkeypox. This could also be accompanied by feeling cold and sweating.

• Muscle pain: Common muscle discomfort similar to flu symptoms is often experienced.

• Skin rashes: A strange rash usually shows up on the face and may spread to other areas of the body. The rash starts as red patches, advances to raised lumps, and eventually turns into fluid-filled blisters.

• Safety precautions: Maintaining personal hygiene is essential, and it is important to regularly wash hands with soap and water. If you don’t have soap and water, then use hand sanitizer. Stay away from individuals exhibiting symptoms or diagnosed with monkeypox to prevent close contact.
