World Cancer Day is an initiative taken by the U.S. Union for the International Cancer Control (UICC) in 2005 with an aim to save millions of preventable deaths each year by educating and raising awareness about cancer.
Several types of research suggest that one-third of the cancer deaths can be avoided by its prevention, and another third can be avoided early detection and treatment.
Despite having proven interventions for prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and care, these medicines, services, and technologies are not widely available in low- and middle-income countries such as India and Kenya. Source
Why is World Cancer Day Important?
World Cancer Day is important because the disease can be avoided by increasing government funding and support for the prevention, detection and treatment programs related to the disease.
The day helps in raising awareness about cancer and to develop practical or effective strategies to address the disease.
UICC played an important role in securing the World Health Organization’s target of a 25% decline in premature deaths from these non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by 2025.
