Every year as initiated by the United Nations, the International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated on the 11th of October. In India, the sex ratio is way lower and unacceptable due to the indiscriminate killing of the female fetus. In order to empower every girl and also remove the taboo UN has initiated the day to celebrate every girl. Why Do We Celebrate the International Day of the Girl?
As per the UNICEF “Launched in 2012 by the United Nations general assembly, amongst the issues focused on by the International Day of the Girl Child are education, equality, child marriage, access to services regarding puberty and sexual health and addressing issues around gender-based violence” Discrimination against girl child is very common and at the same time is unacceptable. What is the Theme of the International Day of the Girl?
According to the report released by the UNICEF, the theme of the year has been decided as “GirlForce: Unscripted and unstoppable” It signifies the idea of stopping anything that undermines the rights of young girls and women in general around the world. in very bold ways the report reads “Girls are breaking boundaries and barriers posed by stereotypes and exclusion, including those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalized communities. As entrepreneurs, innovators and initiators of global movements, girls are creating a world that is relevant for them and future generations.”
What Has Been Done so Far to Achieve the Goals of This Day?
The Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action is the most progress has been considered as one that can be advocated for the rights of women and girls. Now, nearly 25 years later, the Platform for Action remains a powerful tool to analyze gender equality. It calls for a world where every girl and woman can realize all her rights, such as to live free without being violated to attend and complete school, to choose when and whom she marries, and to earn equal pay for equal work.
This day has been dedicated to the welfare of all the girls around the world. International Day of Girl child stands for the protection of every girl and her right irrespective of race and place she belongs. One of the greatest achievements of the organization has been of providing assistance to women from the crisis zone. One of the Uzbek girls says “Whatever life you choose, it’s up to you and it depends on your interests. Share your ideas. Get support from your peers, teachers, and families. Get things done.
