Cancer causes nearly one in six deaths. If you think about it, that is a very high number. According to a recent study, one of the leading causes of high cancer death rates is the lack of affordable cancer treatment options. Apart from a lack of affordable cancer treatment in india, late detection and unequal access to medical services also play a role in such a high number of deaths.

Combine this with other prevailing causes such as genetic mutation or smoking and, you have a ready-made catastrophe in hand.
Affordable Cancer Treatment in India has become a game-changer in decreasing the death rate due to cancer and increasing the survival rates of patients. Indian hospitals also provide access to early detection and adequate treatments at affordable costs.
But before dwelling on its treatment, let’s know a bit about cancer.
About Cancer
Our body contains millions of cells that continuously divide to produce new body cells, for the growth of the body. This process is called mitosis. It is an essential process for the survival of life on Earth. Mitosis aids processes such as growth, repair, and replacement in the body. Only the somatic cells undergo mitosis.
Mitosis aids bodily development as long as the process is under control. But what happens if this process goes unchecked?
Cancer happens.
Cancer is a life-threatening disease where the cells start dividing uncontrollably. This abnormal growth then creates a mass of cells that can infiltrate and destroy normal body tissues. If not treated in time, these cells can spread throughout the body.
Causes of Cancer
The main cause of cancer is a genetic mutation, i.e., changes in the DNA.
External factors such as smoking, having too much alcohol, being obese and high exposure to UV radiation can start cancer. Moreover, pollution has also become one of the leading causes of cancer. In addition, environmental pollutants such as chemicals, radiation, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter have joined the list as well.
Additionally, certain infections such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and human papillomavirus can also trigger the onset of cancer. Consequently, exposure to these external factors, also called carcinogens, can lead to negative changes in the DNA, hence leading to cancer.
Internal factors involve a defective gene or an oncogene. Inherited genetic defects cause around 10-15% of cancer cases around the world. These are the genetic mutations that are passed down from generation to generation. In such cases, even slight exposure to carcinogens can trigger cancer.
Symptoms of Cancer
Cancer produces no symptoms in the beginning. Symptoms such as weight loss and changes in bowel movements can look like symptoms of any other disease. But, once the mass grows, more specific and prolonged symptoms may start appearing.
Symptoms like prolonged fever, changes in skin color, lumps, abnormal bleeding (during coughing and urination), and contraction of food or windpipe can be strong indicators of cancer. However, these symptoms only occur when cancer has reached an advanced stage.
Hence, by the time a cancer diagnosis happens, it becomes too late for cancer treatment to show its effect.
Types of Cancer
The majority of cancers are malignant, i.e., they spread to other parts of the body through blood/lymph nodes to create new tumors away from the site. This process is called Metastasis.
Based on the sites where it occurs, cancer has been classified into five major types, mainly:
- Carcinoma: A type of cancer that starts in skin cells or tissue lining of organs; most commonly diagnosed carcinomas originate in the skin, breast, lungs, kidney, pancreas, and other glands and organs.
- Sarcoma: A rare kind of cancer that grows in either connective tissues such as blood, bones, cartilage, or tendons; can also occur in muscles, nerves, or fat cells.
- Leukemia: A blood cancer where the bone marrow produces white blood cells in huge numbers, hence, suppressing the production of other blood cells; the most common type of cancer among children.
- Myeloma and Lymphoma: Myeloma is the cancer of plasma cells starting in the bone marrow, while Lymphoma starts in infection-fighting cells of the immune system. The latter spreads through the lymphatic system of our body.
- Melanoma: A dangerous type of skin cancer that develops in melanin (skin-coloring pigment); can easily spread to other parts of the body.
Types of Cancer Treatment
Thanks to the advancement in technology, there’s a variety of affordable cancer treatments available in India. There are two main categories of cancer treatment – local treatments such as radiation therapy and surgery, and systematic treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy (drug treatments).
Depending on the spread, two or more treatments may be combined to treat cancer. For example, doctors may use chemotherapy and radiation therapy to shrink the tumor and remove it later with surgery.
Treatments include:
- Surgery: In this, the surgeon removes the tissues containing cancer cells. It is a preferred option if the cancer is in tumor form or hasn’t become malignant.
- Chemotherapy: Cancer drugs are administered at regular intervals to shrink or kill cancer cells.
- Hormone Therapy: Patients are given pills and shots to block the hormones the cancer cells need to grow.
- Immunotherapy: The treatment ropes in your body’s immune system to fight off the cancer cells or control the side effects of other cancer treatments.
- Radiation Therapy: Cancer cells are killed using high-energy X-ray beams.
- Stem Cell/Bone Marrow Transplant: It involves restoring the stem cells that grow into blood cells in people who have had theirs lost due to high doses of radiation therapy or chemotherapy.
- Targeted Therapy: It uses medicines to target specific proteins in cancer cells to stop them from growing.
- Hyperthermia/Thermal Therapy: This treatment uses lasers, perfusion, or radio waves to heat body tissues to as high as 113 °F (45 °C) to kill cancer cells. Thermotherapy causes minimal harm to the tissues.
- Photodynamic Therapy: PDT uses photosensitizer (a drug activated by light) to kill cancer cells.
- Cryoablation: The cancer cells are killed with cold in this treatment. It is done by pumping gas into the tissue to freeze it and then allowing it to thaw. Multiple times, we perform this process to kill cancer cells.
