Unlocking the Secrets of Sleep and Longevity: Is 8 Hours of Sleep Necessary?

This is a question that many have been asking for a long, long time. Our elders have advocated getting 8 hours of sleep for the longest of times, making the elixir to mortality out of it. However, many studies done over the years have come to different conclusions. While some inclined towards getting 8 hours sleep, others didn’t consider it a norm.

However, a latest study done on sleep and longevity associated with it has proved the latter one right. For those curious, don’t stop here!

There is hope for those of us who live (and sleep) in the real world – Getting less than 8 hours of shut-eye a night doesn’t mean you’re doomed to an early grave.

A recent study has shed light on the importance of sleep regularity for longevity. It turns out that going to bed and waking up at consistent times, with minimal interruptions during the night, matters more than the actual duration of sleep. Surprisingly, sleeping six hours every night on a consistent schedule was associated with a lower risk of early death compared to sleeping eight hours with irregular sleep habits.

This study adds to the growing body of research that emphasizes the connection between sleep and longevity. It has become clear that sleep duration alone is not the sole determinant of health and lifespan.

According to Matt Walker, a neuroscientist and director of the Center for Human Sleep Science at the University of California, Berkeley,”We have been missing a crucial part of the story. It’s not just about how much you sleep, but also the regularity of your sleep pattern that has now emerged as a potentially more important factor.”

Unfortunately, more than a third of Americans fail to get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep on a regular basis, as per data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Additionally, around 20% of people report rarely or never waking up feeling well-rested, according to a recent survey.

The study, published in the journal Sleep, revealed that sleep regularity can reduce the risk of premature death by 20% to 48% compared to those with irregular sleep patterns. Irregular sleep habits include inconsistent sleep and wake times, interrupted sleep, and napping.

While sleep duration still plays a role, with those who consistently get enough sleep having the lowest mortality risk, shorter but regular sleep was generally associated with lower mortality rates. This new science highlights the significance of maintaining a consistent sleep schedule for overall health and longevity.
