Researchers have designed a synthetic horse pox virus that can lead to the development of a more effective vaccine against smallpox.

The result shows how techniques are based on the use of synthetic DNA which can be used to advance public health measures.

What is Synthetic Virus?

The synthetic virus is also known as an artificial virus which is developed inside the laboratory under favorable conditions.

Live synthetic viruses have entire genomes constructed from the synthetic viral genes.

A study published in the periodical “Nature Communications,” conducted by National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and University College London (UCL) regarding the development of an artificial virus that kills bacterias.

What is Smallpox?

Smallpox mainly defined as an infectious disease which is caused by one of two virus variants including Variola major and minor.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the risk of death by the disease is higher among babies.

Its initial symptoms include fever, vomiting, and mouth sores. Followed by fluid-filled blisters which scab over.

Treatment of Smallpox:

Smallpox vaccination within two to three days of exposure will prevent lessen the severity of smallpox symptoms in the vast majority of people.

Vaccination is given to the patient in four to seven days after exposure to protect from disease.

Organic and flat types of smallpox are treated with the same therapies such as fluid resuscitation.

No drug is currently approved or recommended for the treatment of smallpox.

Several antiviral treatments have improved for the treatment. The studies suggest that the antiviral drug cidofovir can be useful as a therapeutic agent. But the drug used for the treatment may cause serious kidney toxicity.
