Typhoid vaccines are vaccines which prevent typhoid fever. Several types are widely available – typhoid conjugate vaccine, Ty21a, and Vi capsular polysaccharide vaccine. Untreated typhoid infection leads to kidney failure, or intestinal bleeding, which can be fatal. If the infection spreads to your gallbladder, you could become a chronic carrier of the bacteria that causes typhoid.

What is Typhoid?

 

Typhoid (typhoid fever) is a serious disease. It is caused by bacteria called Salmonella Typhi. This causes a high fever, fatigue, weakness, stomach pains, headache, loss of appetite, and sometimes a rash. If it is not treated properly, it can kill up to 30% of people who get it.

 

A few people who get typhoid become carriers, It can spread the disease to others. Usually, people get typhoid from contaminated food or water.

 

What are the Types of Typhoid Vaccines?

 

There are two types of typhoid vaccines are:

 

Inactivated Typhoid Vaccine

 

1. One dose provides protection take at least 2 weeks before travel to allow the vaccine time to work.

 

2. A booster dose is needed every 2 years for people who remain at risk.

 

Live Typhoid Vaccine

 

1. Four doses one capsule every other day for a week (day 1, day 3, day 5, and day 7). The final dose should be given at least 1 week before travel to allow the vaccine time to work.

 

2. Swallow each dose about an hour before a meal with a cold or lukewarm drink, do not chew the capsule.

 

3. A booster dose is needed every 5 years for people who remain at risk.

 

What are the Symptoms of Typhoid?

 

There are mainly six symptoms of typhoid:

 

1. High Fever

 

2. Weakness

 

3. Stomach pain

 

4. Cough

 

5. Headache

 

6. Diarrhea and constipation

 

What are the Side Effects of Typhoid Vaccine?

 

There are some side effects of typhoid vaccine:

 

Becoming infected with typhoid fever is more dangerous to your health than receiving this vaccine. However, any medicine, this vaccine can cause side effects but the risk of serious side effects is extremely low.

 

 

Common side effects are:

 

1. Fever

 

2. Headache

 

3. Nausea, vomiting

 

4. Skin rash ( Redness )

 

5. Diarrhea, and stomach pain

What are the Typhoid Vaccine Interactions?

 

Try don not drink alcohol within 2 hours after you take a typhoid vaccine capsule. Alcohol can easily damage the capsule and could make the vaccine ineffective.

 

Using this vaccine, take precautions while traveling to further prevent coming into contact with bacteria which cause typhoid fever:

 

1. Avoid eating leafy vegetables such as spinach or lettuce, which are harder to wash properly.

 

2. Avoid eating raw fruits or vegetables that cannot be peeled, or that have been peeled by another person.

 

3. Avoid drinks that contain ice, or frozen treats and flavored ices that may have been made with contaminated water.

 

4. Avoid eating foods you have not cooked or prepared yourself. Use clean surfaces and utensils when preparing food.

 

5. Drink only bottled water (carbonated is best) or water that has been boiled for at least 1 minute.

 

6. Avoid any food or beverage purchased from a street vendor.

 

7. Before using this vaccine, tell your doctor about all other vaccines you have recently received.

 

Do not take an anti-malaria medicine which contains proguanil (such as Malarone) for at least 10 days after you have received your last dose of typhoid vaccine. Proguanil may make typhoid vaccine less effective.

 

Typhoid Vaccine Dosage:

 

1. Follow all instructions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

 

2. The oral typhoid vaccine is given in a set of 4 capsules. Take 1 capsule every day at the same time, like when you first wake up.

 

3. You will take a capsule every day for 7 days. You will need to skip a day between capsules. Follow all instructions on the medicine package.

 

4. Take this medicine with a full glass of cool or warm water. Avoiding very hot or cold water, which causes the capsule to dissolve too quickly.

 

5. Swallow the capsules as earlier as possible after placing it in your mouth. Swallow the capsules whole and do not chew, crush, break, or open it.

 

6. Take capsules on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before eating. Taking a capsule while there is food in your stomach could destroy the capsule and make the vaccine ineffective.

 

7. Take each capsule according to the giving schedule or this vaccine may not be effective. Plan ahead so that you complete all doses at least 1 week before you enter a typhoid risk area. The timing of this vaccination is very important for it to be effective.

 

8. You must keep typhoid vaccine capsules cold. When you receive the capsules, place them in a refrigerator. Keep each of the capsules in the foil blister pack in the refrigerator until you are ready to take it.

 

9. This vaccine should be more effective for up to 5 years. You need to take another series of 4 capsules every 5 years if you continue to be exposed to typhoid.

 

10. Wash your hands help to prevent typhoid when you are in an area where contamination is possible. The overdose of this typhoid vaccine is unlikely to occur when taken as directed.

 

11. Consult your doctor if you forget to take a capsule on the scheduled day. You need to start over to make sure you are fully protected against the disease.
