What is Tdap Vaccine?

A whooping cough is the result of months of coughing, followed by pneumonia, cracked ribs due to severe coughing spells, and other types of complications. While you apparently got vaccinated against the disease when you are a child, the immunity wanes over the time.

A cough can be life-threatening for babies who are less than a year. Those babies are also most likely to catch the disease from household members and other close contacts people who might unaware that they’re infected. So vaccinating adolescents and adults against a cough also helps in protecting babies from the disease.

If a person gets the Tdap vaccine before or during the pregnancy, her baby is likely to get antibodies from the person during pregnancy that will give some protection to a newborn, when the baby is still too young to be vaccinated.

Who is the Tdap Vaccine Recommended For?

  • Pregnant women, women those who get Tdap during each pregnancy, between 27 and 36 weeks of the gestation period.

Is Tdap Vaccine really safe during pregnancy?

Tdap vaccine is considered as safe during pregnancy. After Tdap was introduced in 2005, various studies have found no evidence regarding any pregnant women who get the vaccine are more prone than others to have problems.

Getting Tdap while pregnancy helps in protecting the baby by making sure that the woman doesn’t get pertussis and infect the child after birth. The woman also passes antibodies to better protect the newborn from catching the disease from others.

If you don’t get the chance of taking the vaccine during pregnancy, then also you get it before leaving the birth center or hospital. (The vaccine is also safe if you’re breastfeeding.)

Conclusion:

Tdap vaccine offers the prevention of the life-threatening bacterial diseases such as pertussis, tetanus, and diphtheria. That’s why the Tdap stands for tetanus and diphtheria toxoids with acellular pertussis.
