Dengue, Chikungunya Warning: Diseases May Hit Delhi Earlier This Year

This year, winter was quite warm in Delhi, covering the way for an early summer. This means that mosquito-borne deadly diseases such as dengue and chikungunya will strike earlier than usual in Delhi.

 

Several experts say that although the situation is not alarming yet, the major concerns are mosquitoes’ breeding and spreading of the diseases which have started by now as the weather is not set to change.

 

Meanwhile, scientists warn that this year could see more dengue and chikungunya cases than the previous year.

There were no cases reported till January 13, 2018, but then till March 3, 2018, but hospitals under South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) reported 15 cases of dengue, which is 5 more than last year in the same time period.

 

Last year, out of 9,271 victims in Delhi, 10 died of dengue.

 

Dengue and chikungunya cases usually erupt between July and November, but the early onset of dengue and chikungunya cases in the capital is a matter of concern.

 

 

What is Dengue?

Dengue fever is a painful and is a mosquito-borne viral disease which is caused by any one of four closely related dengue viruses. Dengue virus is transmitted by the female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. This mosquito also transmits the chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika infection.

 

 

What are the Warning Signs and Symptoms of Dengue Fever?

There are several warning signs and symptoms of the dengue fever including;

  • Severe abdominal pain.
  • Rapid breathing.
  • High fever.
  • Vomiting.
  • Blood in vomit.
  • Pain in eyes.
  • Fluid accumulation in the body.
  • Mucosal bleeding.
  • Liver enlargement.
  • A decrease in platelet count.
  • Skin rash.

What is Chikungunya?

The chikungunya is a viral disease which is mainly transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes. It causes fever and joint pain. It is rarely deadly, but the symptoms can be severe, long-lasting, and debilitating. The name chikungunya means “to become contorted” or “to walk bent.”

 

 

What are the Warning Signs and Symptoms of Chikungunya?

Chikungunya’s symptoms usually appear between 4 and 7 days after the person has been bitten by the infected mosquito. Its symptoms include;

  • High fever
  • Joint pain in lower back, ankle, wrists, knees or phalanges.
  • Joint swelling
  • Skin rash
  • A headache
  • Muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea

Less commonly, sign and symptoms can be followed by a maculopapular rash (similar to heat rash or measles), conjunctivitis, vomiting, and nausea.
