Uterine Fibroids

It can be defined as noncancerous growth in the uterus that often appears during the childbearing years of the female. It might also be known as leiomyomas or myomas, uterine fibroids are nowhere related to an increased risk of uterine cancer and almost never develop into cancer.

What are Fibroids?

Fibroids have many sizes ranging from seedlings, which is undetectable by the human eye, a big mass that can distort and enlarge the uterus. A female can have a single fibroid or multiple ones. In the case of multiple fibroids, the uterus expands so much that it reaches the rib cage and can add to an increased amount of weight.

A number of women have fibroids in their lifetime. They can though have no knowledge about the condition as they do not have to go through any symptom to detect. This is diagnosed during a routine checkup.

Causes of Uterine Fibroids:

a) Genetic changes:

Genetic changes in the cell might lead to the development of the fibroids in the uterus. It happens when some cells go under a different genetic structure transformation.

b) Hormones:

The two main female hormones Estrogen and Progesterone are responsible for the uterine wall formation. Excess of these hormones leads to the formation of Fibroids which contain a lot of these hormones.

c) Other Growth Factors:

There are some substances that help the body maintain tissues, such as insulin-like growth factor, may affect fibroid growth.

There is a variation seen in the growth of these fibroids, sometimes they may grow slowly or rapidly, or they may remain the same size for how long they stay inside the body. Some fibroids go through the higher frequency of growth, while some may shrink on their own.

It has been seen that many fibroids present during pregnancy shrink or disappear after pregnancy, as the uterus goes back to normal size.

When there is heavy painful bleeding during periods there is a chance of fibroids being formed in the uterus lining.
