The lung is a vital organ of the body that significantly performs most of the functions of the body, and there are various risks associated with the lung. Lung cancer is a rapidly growing disease in humans, and to avoid these problems, “Lung Cancer Awareness Month” is held every November to spread awareness about this malignant disease.

This month, many organizations have come together to perform various events manifesting the importance of early detection, treatments, and other safety measures regarding lung cancer. Healthcare professionals, organizations, and individuals have come forward to educate more and more people about lung cancer’s impact on individuals and families.

In 1995, Lung Awareness Day was started to provoke education regarding lung cancer. As a result, this day successfully encouraged people and more and more communities to raise their bars to uplift the awareness of lung cancer, due to which the lung cancer community and the lung cancer movement grew, which turned this day into a lung cancer awareness month. After that, November is officially announced as Lung Cancer Awareness Month. On this day, people across the world raise awareness and contribute to uplift these lung cancer communities.

According to various reports, lung cancer is the 2nd most common cancer worldwide. In 2020, there were more than 2.2 million new cases of lung cancer reported. It is the most common cancer in men and the 2nd most common cancer in women.

The theme of Lung Cancer Awareness Month 2023 is “Education, Empowerment, and Eradication”. The theme signifies the importance of awareness among the local public to enhance their lifestyle and promote the education system about the importance of screening, early diagnosis, and preventive measures, and formulating objectives or plans of action to help end lung cancer.

Most lung cancers are caused by smoking, both in smokers and in those who are exposed to secondhand smoke. However, persons who have never smoked or who have never been exposed to secondhand smoke for an extended period may potentially develop lung cancer. There might not be a known cause of lung cancer in some situations.

There is proof that occupational exposure, indoor air pollution, and a history of lung illness are also linked to an elevated risk of lung cancer.

Some string evidence suggests:

  • Lung cancer risk is increased by consuming arsenic-containing drinking water.
  • Taking high-dose beta-carotene supplements risks lung cancer in smokers, both present and past.
