World Diabetes Day was initiated in 1991 by the IDF and the World Health Organization (WHO) to demolish the escalating health threat of diabetes. After its establishment, many organizations and individuals came together and considered World Diabetes Day an opportunity to raise awareness of diabetes as a global public health issue.
This November 14th will be marked as a world-revolutionary event to uplift knowledge regarding diabetes and spread awareness among people. On this day, various organizations come together to provide information on what needs to be done, collectively and individually, for better prevention, diagnosis, and management of the condition.

According to the IDF Diabetes Atlas (2021), over 10.5% of the adult population, ranging from 20 to 79 years old, has diabetes, and half of them are unaware that they are living with the condition. By the end of 2023, IDF projections show that 1 in 8 adults, or approximately 783 million, will be living with diabetes, an increase of 46%.
Type 2 diabetes is one of the most common forms; over 90% of people are living with type 2 diabetes. Urbanization, an aging population, decreasing levels of physical activity, and increasing overweight and obesity prevalence are the critical contributors to the rise of type 2 diabetes.
Due to the rapid growth of diabetic patients every year, World Diabetes Day highlights the challenges and, more importantly, the solutions to scaling up access to diabetes medicines and care. Most importantly, this day discusses topics ranging from the Global Diabetes Compact, which directs global efforts to lower the risk of diabetes and provide access to medication and care, to advocating for the objectives of individuals living with diabetes.
The theme of World Diabetes Day 2023 is “Access to diabetes care.” The theme signifies the importance of diabetic care and encourages people to become conscious of their health. Various campaigns help and promote people so that they can benefit from education on disease and treatment, dietary changes, and exercise, to keep both short-term and long-term blood glucose levels within acceptable bounds.
There are four requirements for complete access to care:
- Coverage: Having affordable health insurance
- Services: Access to screening and preventative care
- Timeliness: Getting healthcare when it is needed
- Workforce: Access to healthcare professionals who are qualified and understand a person’s specific needs
