What is ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease. This can cause long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in your digestive tract. Where does it affect? It affects the innermost lining of your large intestine and rectum. Symptoms usually develop over time, rather than suddenly.

Ulcerative colitis can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications. There is not really any cure that we know of. Certain treatments can greatly reduce the signs and symptoms of the disease. It can help them stay fit for a longer period of time.

Why do we have ulcerative colitis?

It usually occurs due to the immune system doing a mistake. The immune system thinks that the good bacteria and the food are actually harming your intestine. They start acting against them and this causes ulcerative colitis.

So, to protect you, the white blood cells start acting on the inner line of your intestine. The inflammation causes your bowel to move its contents rapidly and empty frequently. As cells on the surface of the lining of your bowel die, ulcers form.

Are there types of ulcerative colitis?

Left-sided colitis

The inflammation extends from the rectum up through the sigmoid and descending colon. Signs and symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and pain on the left side, and unintended weight loss.

Pancolitis
