Did you know?
The first laser angioplasty treatment in India was done in Raipur by Dr. Arun Kalyanasundaram, one of India’s renowned cardiologists. The doctor was flown in from Chennai to perform the complex operation. The patient was suffering from an advanced heart disease and a critical blockage in the left anterior descending artery. Doctors had tried to open up the blockage through routine angioplasty but were unable to perform the procedure.

What Is Coronary Laser Angioplasty?
Laser treatment for heart blockage in India is gaining traction day-by-day due to the numerous benefits it offers over conventional angioplasties. With laser angioplasty treatment in India, it has now become possible to treat highly calcified blockages and severe plaque formation.
Coronary Laser Angioplasty is a minimally invasive, life-saving surgical procedure to treat heart-related diseases like CAD (Coronary heart disease), which can’t be treated with routine angioplasty. In laser angioplasty, also called laser atherectomy, a catheter that emits high energy light is used to unblock arteries. It vaporises blockages and clear vessels without hurting the walls of the vessels.
Mechanisam Of Action Of Laser Angioplasty
It uses a Xenon-Chloride Monochromatic exciter laser to produce UV light at 308nm, with a frequency of 25-80Hz, and a penetration depth of below 10-15 nm. The plaque absorbs light, and this light energy absorption releases laser-induced pressure waves. The pressure waves initiate rapid fluid displacement, which leads to vapor bubble formation.
What Are The Diseases Treated With Laser Atherectomy?
Many serious heart diseases can be treated with laser angioplasty, such as:
- Coronary Heart Disease (CAD): It happens when there is a plaque built-up in the heart arteries which makes the arteries narrow, leading to restricted flow of blood.
- Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD): It is the narrowing or blockage of the vessels that carry blood from the heart to the legs, due to the built-up of fatty plaque in the arteries.
- Carotid Artery Disease (CAD): It is the narrowing of carotid arteries due to plaque build up. It is the major blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.
- Renal Artery Stenosis: It is the narrowing of renal arteries due to plaque build up. It is the major blood vessels that supply blood to the kidneys.
- Stent Restenosis: It is the gradual re-narrowing of the stented segment that occurs mostly between 3 to 12 months after stent placement.
Laser angioplasty is also done to improve the results of balloon angioplasty and stent angioplasty. Firstly, the plaque is cleared via laser angioplasty to open up the narrowed arteries. Then, the stent is placed inside the affected artery to provide strength to it.
What Are The Tests Done Before Laser Angioplasty?
Just like other angioplasties, there are certain tests that a person needs to undergo before laser angioplasty treatment in India. Your health practitioner will discuss your medical history with you. They will also conduct a physcial examination to assess your overall health. Other tests are:
- Blood tests are the first set of tests done to measure the cholestrol levels, blood sugar levels, kidney functioning and other factors that can impact your heart’s health.
- Angiogram is an imaging test used to locate the exact location of blockage in the artery by using contrast dyes and X-rays to create visuals.
- Doppler Ultrasound is a test to evaluate the degree of blockage by assessing the flow and direction of blood in the blood vessels using sound waves.
- Electrocardiogram records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart and can help identify any underlying heart abnormalities or previous heart damage.
- Cardiac Stress Tests evaluate the heart’s response to stress and physical exertion.
Laser Angioplasty Treatment Preparation
There are certain guidelines that are to be followed while preparing for a laser angioplasty, such as:
- Do not eat, or drink (including water) after midnight the day before your surgery.
- Stop smoking.
- Stop taking medicines (clot-inducing or anti-coagulants).
- Do not wear jewelry. (Wedding rings may be worn.)
- Wear loose-fitting clothing. You will have some abdominal tenderness and cramping after surgery.
- Remove any nail polish before surgery, where pulse oximeter is usually placed to measure oxygen levels
What Is The Laser Angioplasty Treatment Procedure?
The following set of procedures are followed for laser angioplasty treatment in India:
- The cardiologist will go through your reports, have a discussion with you and will accordingly advise an appropriate treatment course.
- You are administered local anesthesia to numb the area.
- A small incision is made near the groin or abdomen region to insert the wire.
- Using X Ray images, wire is inserted into the femoral artery and moved to the area where the fatty deposits are restricting the blood flow.
- With the wire acting as a guide, the tube and laser are inserted taken to the affected area of the artery.
- The laser vaporises the plaque, which is monitored by the doctors through contrast dyes.
- Once it is done, the wire is removed and the incision is closed.
- The patient is kept in the hospital for a while to check their vitals. Post that, they are accordingly discharged.
Advantages Of Laser Angioplasty Treatment
Laser Angioplasty, being a novel method for treating heart-related diseases, comes with its own set of advantages. Firstly, the procedure is less complicated than routine angioplasties. Secondly, it provides a more permanent solution as compared to stent or balloon angioplasty. Other advantages are:
- Removes the need of complex surgeries like (CABG) Coronary artery bypass graft surgery
- Increased chances of treating heart blockages which were once untreatable via conventional methods
- Minimal discomfort to the patient
- Procedure is much faster compared to routine angioplasty
- Hospital stay and recovery time is greatly reduced
- Can return to routine life within a short period of time
- Minimally invasive as it doesn’t require large or too many incisions, leading to minimal scarring
- High degree of precision, minimizing the risk of arterial dissection
Laser Angioplasty vs Stent Angioplasty
Feature | Laser Angioplasty | Stent Angioplasty |

Device used | Laser catheter | Balloon catheter and stent |
Risk of restenosis | Higher | Lower |
Recovery time | Shorter | Longer |
Cost | Higher | Lower |
