Those who work on a computer on a regular basis mostly suffer from digital eyestrain. But the good news is it’s avoidable if the proper precautions and care are taken.

Eye injuries in the workplace are very common. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) reports that approximately 2,000 workers suffer from daily occupational injuries requiring medical treatment. However, safety experts and ophthalmologists believe that right eye protection can reduce the severity or even prevent 90% of these eye injuries.

To promote workplace eye safety and health, the following are some steps you can take to prevent and relieve your digital eye strain.

1. Adjust Your Workspace

The optimal distance between your eyes and the screen of your computer should be 20 to 24 inches or about an arm. The center of the computer screen should be between 10 and 15 degrees below eye level. Looking downward is often described as the most comfortable for the eyes, as well as for the back and neck.

2. Blink More

It sounds easy enough, but we often forget to blink, especially when we look at a computer screen. Make sure that you blink often during work. This provides you with the moisture you need. If the dryness persists, talk to your ophthalmologist about eye drops.

3. Use Proper Lighting

One of the main causes of eye fatigue is glare (blinding light). The lighting on a computer screen is due to the intense light from the ceiling or the light coming through the windows, usually directly behind or in front of you. Place the screen of your computer to avoid glare and use curtains on the windows if necessary.

4. Take Breaks

Always give your eyes a break from the screen by following the 20/20/20 rule. This will help to relieve and avoid digital eye strain. In every 20 minutes, look away from your computer toward anything that is placed approx 20 feet away and focus on it for at least 20 seconds.

5. Modify Your Computer’s Display Settings

For the highest comfort at your computer, consider adjusting your display settings. Following are some tips on how you can make the eye-friendly computer display:

Brightness: Always adjust the brightness of the computer screen as same as the surrounding workstation.

Text size: Always enlarge text size to give your eyes a break and provide it comfort.

Color temperature: Computers emit more blue light which is associated with eye strain than others like orange or red. Reducing the color temperature of the display helps in lowering the amount of blue light emitted. This will definitely reduce your eye strain in the long run.
