The United Nations International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been annually celebrated on 3 December internationally, since 1992. With the focus to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all area of society and development and to enhance awareness of the condition of persons with disabilities in every side of social, political, cultural, and economic life.

The United Nations Decade of Disabled Persons was held from 1983 to 1992 to authorize governments and organizations to apply measures to betterment the life of disabled persons all over the world. The UN General Assembly announced officially December 3 as the International Day of Disabled Persons. This day was the first celebration on December 3, 1992. On December 18, 2007, the assembly changed the name of the day from the “International Day of Disabled Persons” to the “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”. The new name was first used in 2008.
Issues That Affect People With Disabilities Which Can be Resolved in the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:
Following are some of the issues that affect people with disabilities including;
- The disabled person has a low percentage in the fields like government jobs, politics, economy etc.
- Due to the unaffordability of transportation and health service, people with disabilities do not receive needed health care.
- People with disabilities do not attend schools and get a proper education.
- Poor implementation of policies and plans can prevent the involvement of people with disabilities.

Health Plans for Disabled Persons by the Government of India on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities:
The Indian government has taken the initiative of providing an excellent environment to ensure full participation of the person with disabilities.
The government of India has introduced multiple schemes, programs, facilities, and concession, for the welfare of the disabled.
Indian Constitution assures equality, freedom, justice, and dignity of all citizens in India including all persons with disabilities which involve an inclusive society for all (article 14).-Protection of rights, Equal opportunities and full participation act, 1995 provide 3% quota in government jobs as well.
Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan or Accessible Indian campaign is launched with an aim on universal accessibility for a person with disabilities. It focuses on bringing awareness about disabled and for their employment.
India is an endorse to UN meeting on rights of persons with disability, 2006.
