We all are familiar with the term infertility but do you know the relation between iodine and fertility? A recent study has revealed that iodine deficiency can cause infertility.

 

Well according to several physicians, iodine is not a very famous nutrient but is essential for proper thyroid function in the body.

Our body obtains thyroid nutrient from food and converts it into thyroid hormones including triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

 

In addition, during pregnancy, a sufficient amount of iodine is essential for the baby’s brain development. Approximately 30% of women of childbearing age aren’t getting enough iodine.

 

This study estimated levels of iodine in the urine of more than 400 women as they were trying to conceive and looked at how long it took these women to conceive.

 

Results showed that about 44% of women had low levels iodine which is below than sufficiency and 23% where severely or moderately iodine deficient. Women who were severely or moderately iodine deficient were 45% less likely to get pregnant per cycle than when with sufficient iodine levels.

 

This result clearly depicts that iodine is very important not only for overall health but also because iodine deficiency can cause infertility.

 

Iodine can be found in varieties of foods such as seafood, meat, seaweed, eggs, dairy, iodized salt, and grains. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises women that those who are pregnant and breastfeeding should take a prenatal vitamin with 150 mcg iodine in order to prevent iodine deficiency.

 

It is important to note that some types of seaweed are high in iodine, as well as the people with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis should avoid the intake of high iodine, as it may make Hashimoto’s worse.

Iodine is the essential part of our diet as it helps in the overall health of a body including the possibilities of fertility. Because the iodine deficiency can cause infertility.
