At the World Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, countries unanimously endorsed the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action – the most progressive plan yet for improving the rights of women and girls. The Beijing Declaration is the first to mention girls’ rights explicitly.

On December 19, 2011, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution designating October 11 as International Day of the Girl Child to recognise girls’ rights and the specific problems that girls face worldwide.

More than 62 million girls around the world had no access to education as of c. 2014, according to USAID. Worldwide and collectively, girls ages 5 to 14 spend more than 160 million hours on household chores than boys of the same age do. Globally, one in four girls are married before age 18.

The International Day of the Girl Child focuses on the need to address the challenges girls face and promote their empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.

Adolescent girls have the right to a safe, educated, and healthy existence throughout their adolescent years and as they age into women. Girls can transform the world if adequately supported during their adolescent years, both as empowered girls today and as tomorrow’s employees, moms, entrepreneurs, mentors, household heads, and political leaders.

The Day of the Girl raises awareness of the concerns that girls confront and what is likely to happen when those issues are resolved. For example, educating girls helps lower the prevalence of child marriage sickness and strengthens the economy by giving girls access to higher-paying employment.

Investing in realising adolescent girls’ power protects their rights today while promising a more equitable and prosperous future in which half of humanity is an equal partner in addressing climate change, political conflict, economic growth, disease prevention, and global sustainability.

Girls are breaking down stereotypes and exclusionary practices, especially those directed at children with disabilities and those living in marginalised communities. As entrepreneurs, innovators, and initiators of global movements, girls are shaping a meaningful world for themselves and future generations.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), approved by world leaders in 2015, represent a blueprint for progress that is both sustainable and leaves no one behind.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment are central to all 17 goals. Only by protecting the rights of women and girls across all goals will we achieve justice and inclusion, economies that work for all, and preserve our shared environment for current and future generations.
