Every year, on May 12, International Nurses Day is observed to recognize and honor nurses’ contributions to society. The Day offers a chance to lobby for better working conditions, education, and resources for nurses worldwide and promote awareness of nurses’ crucial role in the healthcare system.

In 2023, International Nurses Day will have as its theme “Our Nurses. Our Future.” This subject emphasizes nurses’ crucial role in determining the course of healthcare by raising their voices in support of patient care and public health initiatives that raise everyone’s standard of living.

Nurses are essential to the healthcare system because they provide patients of all ages and socioeconomic levels with the required care. They perform their duties at various facilities, including clinics, nursing homes, hospitals, and community health centers. In addition to providing medical care, nurses offer patients and their families emotional support through trying times.

The crucial role nurses play in healthcare has been brought to light by the COVID-19 outbreak. Nurses have been providing patient care and risking their own lives to save others as they have been on the front lines of the pandemic. They were the frontline workers who have put their lives online during the pandemic to keep the healthcare system running. 2023’s International Nurses Day offers a chance to thank nurses for their dedication and efforts throughout the pandemic.

People all across the world honor nurses on International Nurses Day by holding a variety of activities, lectures, and programs. These occasions give nurses a forum to discuss their experiences, highlight their abilities, and promote better working conditions and resources.

Nurse’s Day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, was a statistician and a social reformer from England. She is also known as “Lady with the Lamp” worldwide. She made a revolution in the medical field when she significantly reduced the number of deaths by improving the hygiene and living standards of the patients during the Crimean War.

Not only that, but she set health care and nursing standards in the medical camps and hospitals during the war and later established the Nightingale Training School at St. Thomas Hospital in 1860 to train nurses and healthcare workers.

The first idea to dedicate a day to nurses all over the world came to Dorothy Sutherland in 1995, who was an official from the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare who put forth the idea of International Nurses Day in front of the president and then the idea got rejected but later on in 1965, International Council of Nurses started observing the Day, and in 1974 they decided to make the celebration of an annual event and established May 12 as International Nurses Day.
