Time-Restricted Eating Linked to Higher Cardiovascular Death Risk
Study Overview
A large-scale study involving over 20,000 U.S. adults found that those who limited their eating to a time window of less than 8 hours per day, a practice known as time-restricted eating, had a 91% higher risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who ate across a 12-16 hour window. The research, presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2024, challenges the perceived health benefits of time-restricted eating.
Time-Restricted Eating and Increased Risks
The study revealed that the increased risk of cardiovascular death associated with an 8-hour eating window was also observed among individuals living with heart disease or cancer. Furthermore, for those with existing cardiovascular disease, an eating duration of 8-10 hours was linked to a 66% higher risk of death from heart disease or stroke. Surprisingly, time-restricted eating did not reduce the overall risk of death from any cause.
Surprising Findings
“We were surprised to find that people who followed an 8-hour, time-restricted eating schedule were more likely to die from cardiovascular disease,” said Victor Wenze Zhong, Ph.D., the study’s senior author. “Even though this type of diet has been popular due to its potential short-term benefits, our research clearly shows that, compared with a typical eating time range of 12-16 hours per day, a shorter eating duration was not associated with living longer.”
Cautionary Note and Personalized Approach
The study’s findings highlight the need for a more cautious and personalized approach to dietary recommendations, considering an individual’s health status and the latest scientific evidence. While the study identified an association between an 8-hour eating window and increased cardiovascular death risk, it does not establish a causal relationship.
Limitations and Future Research
The study had limitations, including reliance on self-reported dietary information and the exclusion of other factors that may influence health outcomes. Future research is needed to explore the biological mechanisms underlying the observed associations and to determine if the findings are consistent across different populations worldwide.
Expert Commentary
Christopher D. Gardner, Ph.D., FAHA, from Stanford University, emphasized the importance of considering nutrient quality and demographic differences across the groups classified into different time-restricted eating windows. Additional details regarding the analysis will be crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the findings.
