Every year, on 14 June, countries from all across the world celebrate the World Blood Donor Day.

The day is the combination of events for saying thank you to those unpaid blood donors for saving others life without their own benefits.

Every year, the transfusion of blood and blood products mainly helps in saving millions of lives. Moreover, it can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions and provide them with a higher quality of life.

These unknown donors support complex medical and surgical procedures through the donation of blood. They play a life-saving role in maternal and child care as well as in emergency response to natural and man-made disasters.

It is a service that gives several patients access to safe and healthy blood and blood products in sufficient quantity which is also a key component of an effective healthcare system.

Enough supply of blood can only be ensured through regular donations by voluntary and unpaid blood donors.

Nevertheless, in several countries, these blood services face challenges in making sufficient blood availability for patients, while also ensuring its safety and quality.

For World Blood Donor Day in 2018, the host country is Greece, there are several events through the Hellenic National Blood Centre.
