What is the History of World Population Day?

World Population Day is an event celebrated around the world every year. The day is basically celebrated to raise awareness of the problems regarding the world’s population.

 

It was raised by the public interest when the world population approached approximately five billion on July 11, 1987.

 

The Global Access to Reproductive Health Services is a message that was distributed around the world to celebrate the day when the world’s population was seven billion in 2012.

Through this great celebration of awareness, participants are invited to discuss population issues such as the importance of family planning for the growing population, equality, maternal and child health, poverty, human rights, the right to health, sex education.

 

Contraceptives and safety measures such as condoms, reproductive health, teenage pregnancy, girls’ education, child marriage, sexually transmitted infections and many others.

What is the Theme of World Population Day 2018?

The theme of World Population Day 2018 is “Family Planning is a Human Right.”

 

This year is also important due to the 50th anniversary of the 1968 International Conference on Human Rights, especially for the family planning as a human right around the world.

 

Awareness helps in changing the game: women and girls have the right to avoid exhaustion, burnout and the risk of too many pregnancies being too close together.

 

Men and women have the right to choose when and how often they accept paternity when they do so. Every human being has the human right to determine the direction and extent of his future in this fundamental way.

Non-discrimination: Family planning services should not be based on race, language, sex, religion, political affiliation, age, economic status, national origin, place of residence, marital status, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Accessible: Easy accessible services and products are the keys to better family planning.

 

Acceptable: Contraceptive information and services help in a dignified manner, respecting both modern medical ethics and the culture of the people being accommodated.

 

Good quality: information on family planning should be clearly communicated and scientifically correct.

 

Informed decision making: Every person must be empowered to make decisions about reproduction independently, without pressure, coercion or distortion.

 

Confidentiality and confidentiality: All persons should enjoy the right to privacy when seeking family planning information and services.

 

Participation: Countries commit to ensuring the active and informed participation of people in decisions that affect them, including health issues.
