Every organ has a specific role in our body, similarly. The kidney also plays an important role to keep us healthy. But what if kidneys are not able to perform their work properly, then an artificial process takes place to perform their task. This process is known as Dialysis.

It is a treatment that filters and purifies the blood using a machine. The treatment happens when your kidneys are not producing new blood to your body. It is a treatment that filters and purifies the blood with the help of a machine. So, today we are discussing this treatment and its importance if you have kidney failure.

What is Dialysis?

When your kidneys are healthy and strong, they clean your blood. But also make hormones that keep your bones strong and your blood healthy. When your kidneys fail, you need treatment to replace the work your kidneys used to do. Unless you have a kidney transplant, you will need a treatment which is called dialysis.

What are the Types of Dialysis?

1. Hemodialysis

It is the most common type of kidney failure treatment. This process uses an artificial kidney (hemodialyzer) to remove waste and extra fluid from the blood. The blood is removed from the body and filtered through the artificial kidney. The filtered blood is returned to the body with the help of a treatment machine.

2. Peritoneal Dialysis

It includes surgery to implant a peritoneal dialysis (PD) catheter into your abdomen. The catheter helps to filter your blood through the peritoneum, a membrane in your abdomen. Through treatment, a special fluid called dialysate flows into the peritoneum. The dialysate absorbs waste.  It draws waste out of the bloodstream, it’s drained from your abdomen.

What are the Risk Factors of Dialysis?

These are the following risk factor associated with the different type of dialysis:

The risk associated with Hemodialysis

  • Low blood pressure

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Muscle cramping

  • High blood potassium levels

  • Itching

  • Sepsis

  • Pericarditis, an inflammation of the membrane around the heart

  • Sudden cardiac death

  • Bacteremia, or a bloodstream infection

  • Irregular heartbeat

The risk associated with Peritoneal

  • High blood sugar due to the dextrose in the dialysate

  • Abdominal pain

  • Weight gain

  • Stomach pain

  • Fever

  • Muscle weakness

Are There are any Alternatives For Dialysis?

Dialysis is time-consuming and expensive. Not everyone chooses this, particularly if they’re experiencing severe, acute kidney failure. Maintaining good blood pressure can also help to slow the deterioration of your kidney. Drink fluids to avoid dehydration. Consult to your doctor before taking any anti-inflammatory drugs, including ibuprofen (Advil) and diclofenac (Solaraze, Voltaren).

A kidney transplant is another option for a few people. It’s also a long-term commitment. Consult your doctor to see if a transplant is right for you.

If you are facing these things then kidney transplant is not good for you :

  • Obese

  • Smoke

  • Excess use of alcohol

  • An untreated mental health condition

How to Get Prepared?

Before going for your first treatment, your doctor will surgically implant a tube or device to gain access to your bloodstream. This is typically a quick operation. Wear comfortable clothing during your dialysis treatments. Also, follow your doctor’s instructions. It may include fasting for a certain amount of time before the treatment.

Conclusion:

In the above, we have talked about dialysis and it’s types, symptoms, alternatives, and preparations. Always have a healthy diet avoid having junk foods. If you ever feel any of the above symptoms so talk to your doctor regarding renal cancer as soon as possible.
