What is Diabetes LADA?

Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. Like the autoimmune disease type 1 diabetes. Most of the time they are also known as 1.5 diabetes. Initially, at a glance, this might look like type 2 diabetes but it actually is similar to conditions of type 1 diabetes of the insulin and everything.

What can be the criteria for diagnosis for Diabetes LADA?

According to the Springer Link research, there are some criteria for the diagnosis of Diabetes LADA. These can be as follows:

1) Age

The minimum age at which there can be chances of you being affected is between 25-40 years. It can, however, be random also, there is no hard and fast rule. This age range has been set up depending on the pre-clinical natural history of LADA.

This has been done using the metabolic and immuno-genetic markers. They are the ones that distinguish LADA from classic juvenile-onset type 1 diabetes. Yet these observations have proposed that the operational minimal age be 30 years.

2) Islet autoantibodies

The diagnosis of LADA has relied mainly on seropositivity for antibodies to GAD; insulin autoantibodies (IAA) and antibodies to tyrosine phosphatase-like insulinoma antigen 2 (IA2) were reported to be infrequent in LADA.

However, an accurate profile of humoral immunity in LADA requires further studies to document the prevalence of IAA, IA2 antibodies and ICA in LADA in different populations. GAD antibodies are not a sine qua non – adults with diabetes who are not insulin-dependent at diagnosis and have any islet autoantibody would currently be classified as having LADA.

3) Insulin independence

The other criterion for LADA is a minimum period of 6 months of insulin independence after diagnosis. At least three factors influence the period of insulin independence:

1) The natural history of the disease
2) the timing of diagnosis in relation to natural history;
3) the therapeutic bias of the treating physician.

When you see the symptoms, you might find those similar to normal diabetes. Hence you must visit your diabetologist.

  • Feeling of fatigue most of the time or regularly tired after meals
  • Drowsy
  • Hungry even after the meal

As LADA develops, a person’s ability to produce insulin will gradually decrease and this may lead to symptoms such as

  • A hard to quench the thirst
  • Needing to frequently urinate
  • Blurred vision
  • Tingling nerves

How can the Diabetes LADA be managed?

We always have problems that we can face when managing chronic conditions. When talking about the treatment of LADA you need to focus on controlling hyperglycemia. Also at the same time, preventing the onset of any complications.

When you talk to your doctor, he/she will mention beta cells. It becomes important that these cells are managed in the best way.
