Menstruation is defined as a woman’s monthly bleeding. When a woman menstruates her body drops the lining of the uterus in the form of menstrual blood that flows from the uterus in the cervix and passes out of the body through the vagina. Mainly, the menstrual periods last from 3 to 5 days.

When menstruations or simply known as periods come regularly the process is called the menstrual cycle. If a woman having regular menstrual cycles then you can say that her body is working properly and normally.

 

The menstrual cycle provides several important body chemicals or hormones that helps in keeping the body healthy and fit. It also prepares the woman’s body for pregnancy each month.

 

A cycle is calculated from the first day of 1 period to the first day of the next period. Moreover, the average menstrual cycle is of 28 days long. Whereas, the cycle can also range from 21 to 35 days and from 21 to 45 days in adults and in young teens respectively.

 

 

 

What is Irregular Menstruation or Irregular Periods?

Irregular menstruation or irregular periods (also called oligomenorrhea) which can occur if there are any changes in contraception method, hormonal changes around the time of the menopause, a hormone imbalance, and endurance exercises.

 

It is not necessary to treat irregular periods during puberty or during menopause, but if irregular menstruation occurs during the reproductive years, then the medical advice is necessary.

 

You may have irregular periods if you notice following changes:

  • The time between each menstruation period.
  • Lose more or less blood during a menstruation period than usual.
  • Varies in the number of days of your period lasts.

 

 

 

What are the Causes of Irregular Menstruation?

There are several things that can cause irregular periods including;

  • The main cause for it the irregular menstruation is changing in the level of hormones estrogen and progesterone.
  • Having an intrauterine device
  • Use of birth control pills or another type of medications
  • Too much exercise
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Stress
  • Underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) or overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • Thickening of or polyps on the uterine lining
  • Uterine fibroids

What are the Treatments for Irregular Menstruation?

A woman does not need any type of irregular periods’ treatment if she has undergone for treatment regarding another condition which is affecting her menstrual cycle.

 

Hypothyroidism and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are two main common causes of irregular periods in women which can be treated by restoring the hormone balance in the body.

 

If a woman has PCOS, then her doctor may recommend her birth control pills or other hormones related medicines to start the menstruation period. If a woman has hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), she may need to take thyroid hormones.

 

 

Other things that may help include:

  • Changing birth control
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Hormone therapy (HT)
  • Surgery
