Mothers With Dogs Have Healthier Babies

, Health A2Z

The arrival of a new baby is very exciting for everybody in the house. It is also a time of an immense change, with a new lifestyle and routine for the whole family including your pets. With a little planning and early changes to your loving pet’s routine, bringing home a new baby can be a pleasant and delightful experience for you and your pet.

You know when you bring a newborn baby home, your dog will face an unbelievable number of novel sounds, sights, and smells. Sourly you will alter your daily routine so your dog’s schedule will change, too. And, out of requirement, you will get less of your time and attention.

To make things go as smoothly as possible for everyone including your family members and dog, it’s important to take some time to prepare your dog for the arrival of the new addition. For this, you have to focus on two things;

  • Teaching your dog the skills that the pet needs to interact safely with the new family member.
  • Helping your dog adjust to new experiences and changes.

According to a study, babies in homes with dogs have fewer colds, ear infections, and need fewer antibiotics in their first year of life than those babies who raised in pet-free homes.

Earlier studies also found that children raised on farms get much less asthma often than other kids. And some studies have found that kids in homes with dogs have fewer chances of colds than other kids.

I have also read a study published in the periodical “Pediatrics,” which reveals that babies who grow up in homes with a pet (it could be a dog or a cat) are healthier babies and are less likely to get ill or weak. This is due to early-life exposure to household pets has the potential to reduce the risk for allergic disease and overweight, especially following cesarean delivery.

In general, people asked doctors that should they keep their newborn babies away from their pets? But the answer is ‘NO’ because pets help in developing healthy babies.

Things to be Prepared For the Arrival of New Baby in the Home:

There are lots of things to be prepared in the home before the arrival of the newborn baby in the home including;

1. Making a Plan-

I think if you teach your pet regarding few pieces of training it will be beneficial for you and for your baby as well like teaching your pet about obedience skills, introducing your pet with new experiences, and anticipate the changes in your pet’s daily routine.

2. Teaching Your Dog Important New Skills-

If you have a good verbal control over your pet it will really help when it comes to balancing the pet’s needs and the baby’s care. For this, you need to teach the following few things to your pet including;

  • Basic manners such as sit and down, greet people politely and come when called.
  • Special skills like hand targeting and playing fetch.

3. Preparing Your Dog for Lifestyle Changes-

Planning and practicing the changes of daily routine.

Conclusion:

Although having pets with newborn babies in the same house does not effect. But I will advise when your baby is very young, do not allow your family dog or cat to lick your baby’s face. This could transmit infectious material like feces into the baby’s eyes or mouth. As your baby grows older, baby’s immune system will get much stronger and the baby can play with and even can be licked by your pet without any consequences.
