What is Skin Disease?

 

Skin disease is defined as an infection of the skin which can be caused by fungus, bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

There are several common skin diseases separated by their types;

 

  1. Temporary skin disease
  2. Permanent skin disease
  3. Internal skin disease
  4. Skin disease for different age group

 

 

Temporary Skin Disease:

 

Acne- It is the most common widespread skin conditions, that comes in different forms such as pustules which are common red pimples that have pus at their tips and cysts that are larger painful, pus-filled infections that lie beneath the skin.

 

Hives- They are itchy welts that raised up from the normal layer of the skin, caused by an allergic reaction in the body or outside factors like illnesses and stress.

 

Warts- Thes are commonly raised bumps on the skin, caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can appear on any part of the body like hands, feet, and joints.

 

Fungal nail infection- In this condition fungus lives under, near and around the nails, its treatment is usually an anti-fungal cream or other fungal treatment.

 

Cold sore- These are usually red, fluid-filled blister found near the mouth, its symptoms include burning or itching sensations and caused by the herpes simplex virus.

 

Candidiasis- It is defined as the overgrowth of the Candida albicans fungus on the body, normally found in the armpits, groin, or under folds of skin like the knee.

 

Athlete’s foot- It is a rash like condition caused by the fungus that rapidly multiplies in warm, damp conditions like athletic shoes, its symptoms include itchy, red skin, and dry skin.

 

Permanent Skin Disease:

 

Seborrheic dermatitis- The condition is commonly known as cradle cap, usually found in baby’s skin like the scalp, skin that affected from seborrheic dermatitis appears reddish, swollen, and appear greasy.

 

Moles- These are the common growths on the skin, appears due to bunching of skin cells with tissue surrounding them.

 

Melanoma- Abnormal moles further develops in melanoma and leads to skin cancer, and patients with melanoma have surgery, chemotherapy or undergo radiation treatments.

 

Rosacea- It is mainly associated with redness of the skin, it has many symptoms like redness is caused due to erythematotelangiectatic rosacea and ocular rosacea can cause red and irritated eyes.

 

Lupus- It is a complex disorder that varies from person to person, and affects the immune system, causing inflammation and pain.

Psoriasis- It is an autoimmune disorder which includes patches of abnormal skin. There are five types of psoriasis including plaque psoriasis, pustular psoriasis, erythrodermic psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, and inverse psoriasis.

 

Eczema- This is mainly found in infants and young children with symptoms including rashes on the face, behind the elbows, scalp or on the neck, wrists, legs, or ankles.

 

Vitiligo- It is the condition of pigmentation of the skin like white patches which appears in sunlight.

 

Internal Skin Disease:

 

Carbuncle- The disease is caused by Staphylococcus aureus bacteria that causes red, irritated lump underneath the skin.

 

Cellulitis- It is the bacterial infection of the skin that causes redness and swelling, and the disease is treated with antibiotics.

There are several skin diseases that are categorized by age group including:

 

In children-

 

  • Hemangiomas are small red scratches or bumps on neck, head, or face of infants.

 

  • Measles is the airborne viral illness, which appears red or brown rash on the body.

 

  • Dermatomyositis is the rare inflammatory skin disease, appears red-to-purple rash on the chest, face, nails, or elbows.

 

  • Impetigo is a contagious and common infection of the skin, usually, cause itchy sores and blisters on face and mouth.

 

In adults-

 

  • Shingles (herpes zoster) is caused by the return of the infection that causes chickenpox that appears reddish and blistering rash all over the body.

 

  • Seborrheic keratoses are harmless bumps that appear black, dark brown or yellow bumpy patches of skin.
