World Water Day is an event which is celebrated on 22nd March every year. Why the World Water Day is Celebrated?

The first International World Water Day was identified by the United Nations in 1993. This day is celebrated by organizing a variety of events and activities like visual art, theatrical and musical celebrations of water, excursions to the local ponds, lakes, rivers, and reservoirs, meeting with local, international level and national over water management and safety, distributing messages through TV and radio channels or internet, educational events based on the importance of clean water and traditionalist measures, competitions and so many activities. These events happen to raise money for access to clean and affordable water for everyone.

This is mainly assisted by stakeholders across the world. Governmental and non-governmental organizations such as UNICEF and WaterAid promote clean water for people and sustainable aquatic habitats for animals.

The Theme of World Water Day 2019:

World Water Day 2019 theme is “Leaving no one behind” which is the central promise of the 2030 agenda for continual development: as everyone must benefit. At present, most of the people are still living without safe water, which means ‘safely managed to drink water service’ water that is accessible on the premises, available when needed, and free from befoul.

Human Rights

The human right to water or anything empowers everyone, without discrimination, to sufficient, safe, acceptable, physically accessible and affordable water for personal and domestic use; which includes water for drinking, personal sanitation, cleaning of clothes, food preparation, and personal and household hygiene.

People are left without safe water for many different reasons. There are some of the ‘grounds for discrimination’ which cause certain people to be particularly disadvantaged when it comes to accessing water.

1. Sex and gender

2. Race, ethnicity, religion, birth, caste, language, and nationality

3. Disability, age, and health status

4. Property, tenure, residence, economic and social status

5. Some parts, like environmental degradation, climate change, population growth, conflict, forced displacement and migration flows can also disproportionately affect marginalized groups through impacts on water.
