The gift of sight, as they say, is one of the most precious. The ability to see helps you see the most beautiful things around the world. Yet, this is not available to everyone in the world. However, in 1829, Louis Braille gave a gift to his people of the blind community. World Braille Day is celebrated on 4th January every year honoring the birth of its inventor, Louis Braille.

World Braille Day

This World Braille Day, you must know more about this gift to those who are not so privileged as you. Louis Braille gave the world his way of reading without being able to see. It was a method of dots and patterns. It was later termed as “Braille Script” to honor his contribution.

Understand about Braille clearly on Braille Day, 2020

What is Braille? We are sure you must be thinking it in your head. United Nations defines Braille as “Braille is a tactile representation of alphabetic and numerical symbols using six dots to represent each letter and number, and even musical, mathematical and scientific symbols. Braille, which is named after its inventor in 19th century France, Louis Braille, is used by blind and partially sighted people to read the same books and periodicals as those printed in a visual font.

Braille is essential in the context of education, freedom of expression and opinion, as well as social inclusion, as reflected in article 2 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”

What is the theme of World Braille Day, 2020?

What is the Importance of Braille Day and Braille?

World Braille Day is celebrated every year on January 4th because it is Louis Braille’s birthday, the inventor of braille! He was born in 1809 in France.

Unfortunately, he was blinded after a childhood accident. A prodigy by birth he soon mastered his new way of living. When he was just 15 years old, he created the system we know today as braille. This was based on a system of writing developed by Charles Barbier. Over the years braille was made easier to read, and now it’s used the world over!

Why is Braille Script so important?

What if we tell you to stop studying, and never follow your dreams? We will be wrong in doing so right? Hence why should a blind child or a blind adult be stopped from doing what they want in life?

World Braille Day spreads awareness about braille and other accessible forms of communication. Everyone deserves the same accommodations and services, regardless of ability. On World Braille Day, let’s remember that and do our part to make our workplaces more accessible for everyone.

It is very important to help our fellow friends. World Braille Day is a reminder to do our bit for them. They are not “disabled” they are specially-abled. Nothing should stop themselves from achieving what they want in life.

As Louis Braille said, “Access to communication in the widest sense is access to knowledge, and that is vitally important for us if we are not to go on being despised or patronized by condescending sighted people. We do not need pity, nor do we need to be reminded that we are vulnerable. We must be treated as equals — and communication is the way we can bring this about.”

Celebrate this World Braille Day with people you know. Tell them that we stand by them and will always be there for them!
