More than 1 million people all around the worldwide are infected daily by any of the sexually transmitted infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis, and syphilis, according to WHO estimates.

“It is a wake-up call for a concerted effort to ensure everyone, everywhere should access the services they need to prevent and treat such debilitating diseases,” WHO official Dr. Peter Salama said.

The study found more than 376 million new cases of these sexually transmitted infections in 2016. By these infections, there were 127 million new cases of chlamydia, 6.3 million of syphilis 87 million of gonorrhea, and 156 million of trichomoniasis.

These data are covering 2016 track men and women 15-49 and “from the last published data for 2012, there has been no substantive decline in either the rates of new or existing infections,” According to WHO.

Ways to Prevent Sexually Transmitted Infections By WHO:

Behavioral interventions and counseling offer primary prevention against STIs (including HIV), as well as against unintended pregnancies. These include:

comprehensive sexuality education, HIV and STI pre- and post-test counseling;

  • safer sex, risk-reduction counseling, condom promotion

  • STI interventions targeted to key populations, like sex workers, men who have sex with the other men and people who have drugs through injections

  • Sexually transmitted infections prevention counseling and education tailored to the needs of adolescents.

Additionally, counseling can improve a person’s ability to recognize the symptoms of the infection and increase the likelihood they will seek care or encourage a sexual partner to do so. Unfortunately, lack of training of health workers, lack of public awareness, and long-standing, widespread stigma around STIs remain barriers to greater and more effective use of these interventions.

What Are The Symptoms of STI?

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can have a wide range of signs and symptoms, and sometimes it includes no symptoms. That’s why they can be unnoticed until complications occur or a partner is diagnosed. Some common symptoms that might indicate an STI include:

  • Sores or bumps on the genitals

  • Burning or painful urination

  • Discharge from the penis

  • Odd-smelling or unusual vaginal discharge

  • Pain during sex

  • Sore, swollen lymph nodes

  • Lower abdominal pain

  • A rash over the trunk, hands or feet
