Identification of Six Blood Biomarkers Linked to Arterial Inflammation Changes in Rheumatoid Arthritis Patients.

Methodology:

In the pursuit of understanding arterial inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, researchers examined 24 potential blood biomarkers associated with RA and systemic inflammation. The study, conducted on 109 participants in the TARGET trial, utilized [18F] fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-PET/CT scans at baseline and 24 weeks to measure arterial inflammation. Among the tested biomarkers, baseline levels of serum amyloid A, C-reactive protein, soluble tumor necrosis factor receptor 1, adiponectin, YKL-4, and osteoprotegerin were found to correlate significantly with changes in arterial inflammation observed in FDG-PET/CT scans. The incorporation of these biomarkers into predictive models demonstrated an improvement in adjusted R2 from 0.20 to 0.32 (likelihood ratio test, P = .0005). The researchers aim to validate these findings in a larger, external patient cohort.
