The World AIDS Day was first considered in August 1987 by Thomas Netter and James W. Bunn, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDS at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland. Both Netter and Bunn took their idea and concept of the World AIDS Day to Dr. Jonathan Mann, Director of the Global Programme on AIDS (today is known as UNAIDS). Dr. Mann liked the idea and approved it.

What is the HIV Vaccine and Is HIV Vaccine Useful?

An HIV vaccine may have the goal of protecting people who do not have HIV from being infected with the virus or treating an HIV-infected person.

There are two ways to an HIV vaccine: one is an active vaccination approach that aims to induce an immune response against HIV, and another is a passive vaccination approach in which antibodies performed against HIV infection.

Well, currently there is no licensed HIV vaccine for HIV but there are multiple research projects that are trying to find an effective vaccine for the infection. Some, but absolutely not all, HIV-infected individuals usually produce broadly neutralizing antibodies which keep the suppressed virus and these people remain asymptomatic for years.

Some neutralizing antibodies have been cloned in the monoclonal antibodies and are being tested in passive vaccination clinical trials.
