We hope you remember, the disaster management class at school right? Where you would learn how to escape a fire or save the life of a person. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation better is known as CPR has been one of the most known first aid methods. It has been taught to various rescue teams around the world. It is also considered as a method that should be known to everyone in case of any forbidden emergency.

What is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation?

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving skill and is useful in many emergencies. These emergencies include a heart attack or near-drowning. It is a skill that is used in conditions where someone’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped. The American Heart Association recommends that everyone “untrained bystanders and medical personnel alike, begin CPR with chest compressions.”

What is the Procedure for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation?

American Heart Association has given a descriptive procedure that must be followed while giving CPS. The following is the procedure also known as C-A-B.

1) Compression to Restore Blood Circulation:

Keep the body of the injured firm on his back. Place the heel of one hand over the center of the person’s chest, between the nipples. Place your other hand on top of the first hand. Keep your elbows straight and position your shoulders directly above your hands.

Compress the chest with your upper body keeping it away about 2 inches 2.4 inches. Now give 100 to 200 compressions on intervals. If not trained, provide compression until medical help arrives.

2) Airway:

If you’re trained in CPR and you’ve performed 30 chest compressions, open the person’s airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. Put your palm on the person’s forehead and gently tilt the head back. Then with the other hand, gently lift the chin forward to open the airway.

3) Breath Restoration:

With the airway open you need to pinch the nostrils shut for mouth-to-mouth breathing by making a seal.
Prepare to give two rescue breaths. Give the first rescue breath for 1 second and watch the chest rise. If it does rise, give the second breath. Thirty chest compressions followed by two rescue breaths is considered one cycle. Be careful not to provide too many breaths or to breathe with too much force.

What Should You Make Sure Before Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation?

You should make sure that these three things are kept in mind while addressing a patient that needs to be given CPR.

  • Is the environment safe for the person?
  • Is the person conscious or unconscious?
  • If the person appears unconscious, ask them if they are okay with light shaking to the body.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is not the same for every person. When it comes to a child or an infant the number of compressions and the force is less. You need to keep these points in mind.
