What is Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia is the medical idiom for a hip socket which doesn’t fully cover the ball portion of the upper thighbone. This allows the hip joint to become partially or completely dislocated. Most of the people with hip dysplasia are born with the condition.

Which means the ball of our thigh bone (femoral head) fits into the socket of the pelvis to form the hip joint. If our hips are normal, the ball rotates freely in the socket to let you move. But if you have dysplasia, our hip socket doesn’t completely cover the ball of our thigh bone, causing our hip joint to easily dislocate.

It also wears your hip joint out faster than normal. Imagine a tire that’s out of balance on a car. The tread on that tire will wear out sooner than it would if it were properly aligned. Most people who have hip dysplasia are born with it. Doctors usually check for it in newborns, and during each well-baby visit until they’re 1 year old.

What are the Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia?

Signs and symptoms are differed by age group. In infants, you might notice that one leg is longer than the other. Once a child starts walking, a limp may develop. During diaper changes, one hip may be less flexible than the other.

In adults, hip dysplasia can cause painful complications such as osteoarthritis or a hip labral tear. This may cause activity-related groin pain. In some cases, you can experience a sensation of instability in the hip.

What are the Causes of Hip Dysplasia?

Hip dysplasia can run in families and it generally happens more frequently in girls than boys. It shows up in babies because the hip joint is made of soft cartilage when the baby born. Over time, it hardens into bone. The ball and socket help to mold each other during this time, so if the ball isn’t fitting properly into the socket, the socket may end up too shallow and not form completely over the ball.

What are the Risks of Hip Dysplasia?

There are a few reasons this can happen right before a baby is born:

  • If the baby is large or there is oligohydramnios, a condition in which there is too little amniotic fluid in the sac that baby has lived in throughout the pregnancy, that limits the baby’s movement.

  • The baby is in the breech position meaning the rear, not the head, is toward the birth canal.

What Happens if Hip Dysplasia is Left Untreated?

Hip the deformity can lead to pain, discomfort ness, waddling walking and a decrease in strength. If the treatment is not treated completely then it develops osteoarthritis (a painful hip disorder) and other deformities can develop in young adulthood.

What is the Treatment of Hip Dysplasia?

The best treatment of Hip Dysplasia is a periacetabular osteotomy (PAO) is a surgery to change the orientation of the hip socket so it is in a better position to cover the ball of the hip joint (femoral head). A series of cuts is performed around the acetabulum to allow the socket to be reoriented in an effort to restore normal alignment.

Conclusion

As we have discussed in the above blog, Hip Dysplasia and how it affects to the infant as well as adults. There is only a cure which is surgery and exercises with the help of these two options your condition gets stable. If your condition gets unstable then you should consult a doctor immediately.
