Make a Commitment to Managing Your Diabetes

Monitor your blood sugar regularly, and follow the doctor’s instructions for managing your blood sugar level. Take your medications as directed by your doctor. Ask your doctor for help when you need it.

Don’t Smoke

Smoking can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes along with the risk of various diabetes complications, including:

  • Reduced blood flow in the feet and legs, which can lead to infections.

  • Eye disease, which can lead to blindness

  • Nerve damage

  • Premature death

Keep your BP and Cholesterol Control

Like diabetes, high BP can also damage your blood vessels. High cholesterol is a concern, too, since the damage is usually worse and more frequent if you have diabetes. When these conditions are combined together, they can lead to a stroke, heart attack or other life-threatening conditions.

Schedule Regular Physicals and Eye Exams

Schedule at least two to four diabetes checkups a year, along with with it your annual physical as well as routine eye exams. During the physical examination, your doctor will ask about your nutrition and activity level to reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications which includes nerve damage, signs of kidney damage, and heart disease and screen for other medical problems.

Dental Care

Diabetes may leave you prone to gum infections. Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss your teeth daily and schedule dental exams at least twice a year. contact your dentist if your gums bleed or look red or swollen.

Pay Attention to Your Feet

High blood sugar level can reduce the blood flow and damage the nerves in your feet. If left untreated, blisters and cuts can lead to serious infections. Diabetes can lead to tingling or loss of sensation, pain in your feet.

  • Wash your feet once a day in lukewarm water. Avoid soaking your feet for a long time, as this can lead to dry skin.
