What is cholesterol?

Let’s begin with ‘B’ as in Basic, Cholesterol is a wax type fat substance found in all the cells of the body. In particular, cholesterol is needed for making hormones, vitamin D, and everything which is need for the digestion of food.  You can also get cholesterol from animal sources such as egg yolks, meat, and cheese. Else your body, in particular, your liver can make enough for itself.

Too much cholesterol can cause severe conditions which can turn fatal. Okay, let’s move ahead.

What are the different types of cholesterol?

If you say cholesterol float around in your blood, true it does. But the difference is cholesterol can not move on its own. For that protein is needed and the combination of protein with cholesterol is called Lipoprotein.

Here are the two main types of cholesterol:

1. LDL Cholesterol

LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Where this LDL is a “Bad Guy” or “Bad Cholesterol.” LDL combines with proteins and other substances in the blood and forms plaque. Further plaques buildup and leads to stiffer, narrower, or blocked blood vessels.

2. HDL Cholesterol

HDL refers to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. You can call HDL “Good Guy” or “Good Cholesterol.” HDL cholesterol doesn’t clog arteries. HDL work is to remove cholesterol from the blood vessels, further carries it back to the liver. In the liver, it is further broken down and removed from the body.

Another trick for you to learn about the different types of cholesterol. In LDL- where ‘L’ stands for ‘low-quality.’ On the other hand, in HDL- ‘H’ stands for ‘Healthful.’
