It is like a nightmare to think about a moment where you cannot move, you cannot scream and you cannot ask for help. While we can only think and imagine, some of our fellow friends and family might be suffering from a situation like this, every single day. This is in medical terms called Sleep Paralysis. This might have many symptoms and also specific symptoms and conditions about which most of us might not be aware of. History has always been confused about what could be the reason behind it, however, the condition has become too common among all age groups.

Type of sleep paralysis



There are two types of Sleep paralysis depending upon the time they occur, Sleep paralysis usually occurs either once or twice. When it occurs while you are falling asleep, it’s called hypnagogic or predormital sleep paralysis. In case it happens as you are waking up, it’s called hypnopompic or postdormital sleep paralysis.



Causes of sleep paralysis:


It is hard to say what might cause the person to full inactivity during their sleeping hours. Some say that it is due to them not being able to process the right amount of sleep in the right phases. While some have attached a mythical logic behind it which even science disapproves of. There is no clear explanation but some causes have been found definite through proper observation and examination of patients.


  • Not getting enough sleep


  • Irregular sleeping patterns


  • Narcolepsy – a long-term condition that causes a person to suddenly fall asleep at inappropriate times


  • A hereditary history of sleep paralysis


  • Sleeping on your back


These are not full-proof causes but might be one of them for you to go through the sleep paralysis.

Symptoms of sleep paralysis:


Most common and one of the major symptoms of the condition is not being aware of what is going around you, or being extremely unaware of your surrounding conditions. In case, you go through an episode, these are the following things that might happen with you:


• Find it difficult to take deep breaths, as if your chest is being crushed or restricted


• Be able to move your eyes, while some can other’s find it difficult


• Hallucination– many people feel that a presence wishes to harm them


• Feeling very frightened



These symptoms are indeed scary and might be extremely rare or common as well. So it is advised that you should speak to your doctor if you suffer from these symptoms.

Care During Sleep Paralysis:


What care is taken during sleep paralysis? It is important to know and learn the tips that might help you get through this condition.


  • Make sure you finish the needed sleeping hours.


  • Maintain the pattern of going to sleep and waking up


  • Creating an environment of comfortable sleep.


  • Avoid eating big meals, smoking, or drinking alcohol or caffeine shortly before going to bed


  • Get regular exercise
