Since 1988, December 1st has been designated as World AIDS Day, a global observance aimed at increasing awareness of the AIDS pandemic resulting from the spread of HIV infection and commemorating those who have succumbed to the disease. AIDS, or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, is a life-threatening condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which attacks the patient’s immune system, diminishing its resistance to other illnesses. Across the globe, government officials, health organizations, and individuals come together on this day to promote education on AIDS prevention and control.

Recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of eleven official global public health campaigns, World AIDS Day shares this distinction with events such as World Health Day, World Blood Donor Day, World Immunization Week, World Tuberculosis Day, World No Tobacco Day, World Malaria Day, World Hepatitis Day, World Antimicrobial Awareness Week, World Patient Safety Day, and World Chagas Disease Day.

As of 2020, AIDS has claimed the lives of 27.2 to 47.8 million people worldwide, and approximately 37.7 million individuals are living with HIV, solidifying its status as one of the most critical global public health challenges in recorded history. Notably, improved access to antiretroviral treatment in various regions has led to a 64% decrease in the death rate from the AIDS epidemic since its peak in 2004, with numbers dropping from 1.9 million in 2004 to 680,000 in 2020.

Theme: “Let communities lead”

Communities that live with and are impacted by HIV, including networks of individuals from key populations and youth leaders, play a crucial role in advancing the HIV response. Their contributions extend to providing vital prevention, testing, and treatment support services, fostering trust, devising innovative solutions, promoting health, overseeing policy and program implementation, and ensuring accountability from service providers.

Recognizing the indispensable role of these communities, the theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is ‘Let communities lead.’ This theme goes beyond a mere celebration of community achievements; it serves as a rallying call to action, urging the facilitation and support of communities in their leadership capacities. By empowering and aligning with communities, the world can make significant strides towards putting an end to AIDS.
