Does Really Coffee is Effective in Parkinson's Disease?: Study

Not only this study but also there is more evidence which says that coffee is effective in Parkinson’s disease. This study combined two compounds that are found in coffee which helps in acting as a therapeutical against Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

A Lewy body dementia is a disease which is associated with an abnormal deposit of a protein known as alpha-synuclein in the brain. Whereas Parkinson’s disease is a disorder related to the central nervous system that affects movement, including tremors.

Both the diseases mostly occur in old age. In this study, the researchers from the Rutgers University discovered that caffeine, which shows that coffee’s special protective agent worked with another compound which is found in coffee beans’ waxy coating that helps in slowing down brain degeneration in mice.

Coffee bean compound called EHT (Eicosanoyl-5-hydroxytryptamine) helps in protecting the brains of mice against the abnormal protein accumulation which is associated with Lewy body dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

In a statement M. Maral Mouradian, Professor and lead author, states that “EHT is a compound found in various types of coffee but the amount varies. It is important that the appropriate amount and ratio be determined so people do not over-caffeinate themselves as that can have negative health consequences. The study was observational in nature, the researchers said that further research is required to determine the proper amounts and ratio of EHT and caffeine for a protective effect in people.”

The study supports the earlier findings of studies that have suggested that drinking coffee is beneficial for patients with Parkinson’s disease and coffee is effective in Parkinson’s disease.

The study said that caffeine and EHT alone are not effective, but when given together, they help in boosting the activity of a catalyst that prevents the accumulation of harmful proteins in the brain.
