What is Brain Aneurysm?

A brain aneurysm begins when a weak spot in the brain’s arterial wall bulges and fills with blood. It may also be called an intracranial aneurysm or cerebral aneurysm.

A brain aneurysm is a potentially life-threatening condition that can affect a person at any age, no particular age required for this condition but there is a scene after the age of 40 people starts experiencing this. If a brain aneurysm rupture then it’s an emergency situation that can result in a stroke, brain damage, and even death if not treated immediately. Although, not all aneurysms will rupture. An estimated 50 to 80 percent of all aneurysms never rupture in a person’s lifetime.

What are the Symptoms of Brain Aneurysm?

Aneurysms are uncertain and may not show any symptoms until they rupture. Large or ruptured aneurysms will usually show definite symptoms and require emergency medical care. The signs and symptoms of an aneurysm vary based on whether it’s ruptured or not.

Symptoms of an unruptured aneurysm include:

  • Headache or pain behind or above the eye.

  • Blurred or double vision

  • Dizziness

  • Visual deficits

  • Seizures

Symptoms of a ruptured aneurysm include:

  • Sudden, severe headache

  • Neck stiffness

  • Blurry or double vision

  • Sensitivity to light

  • Drooping eyelid

  • Trouble walking or dizziness

  • Nausea or Vomiting

  • Loss of consciousness

What are the Complications of a Brain Aneurysm?

The complications start when a brain aneurysm bursts, the bleeding usually lasts only a few seconds. Although, the blood causes straight damage to surrounding cells and damage or kills other cells. It creates/makes some pressure inside the skull.

If the pressure becomes too high then the blood and oxygen supply to the brain may be disrupted to the point which loss of consciousness or even death may occur.

Complications which develops after the rupture of an aneurysm include:

Re-bleeding: An aneurysm that has ruptured or leaked is at risk of bleeding again. Re-bleeding can cause further damage to brain cells.

Vasospasm: After a brain aneurysm ruptures, blood vessels in your brain may narrow erratically (vasospasm). This condition can also limit the blood flow to brain cells and cause additional cell damage and loss.

Hydrocephalus: When an aneurysm rupture results in bleeding in the space between the brain and surrounding tissue most often the case the blood can block the circulation of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal fluid). This can result in an excess of cerebrospinal fluid which increases some pressure on the brain and can damage tissues.

Hyponatremia: Subarachnoid hemorrhage from a ruptured brain aneurysm can disrupt the balance of sodium in the blood. This may begin from damage to the hypothalamus, an area near the base of the brain.

What is the Recovery Time For a Brain Aneurysm?

Approximately it’ll take 3 to 6 weeks to fully recover. If you have or had any bleeding from the aneurysm this may take a lot of time. If you have or had a stroke or brain injury from the bleeding, you may get permanent problems like- trouble with speech or thinking, muscle weakness, or numbness.
