When a patient has heart failure then left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is become a very beneficial option according to the doctor. In the last few years, everyone has changed their lifestyle, due to this heart diseases are being seen more. But technology has also improved day by day and there are various treatments available for heart disease. Still, technological advancement sometimes gives a second chance to live.

What Is A Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) Implantation?

It is a mechanical pump that is directly attached to a patient heart. This mechanical pump helps the bottom left chamber of the heart (also called the left ventricle) pump blood out of the ventricle to the aorta and the other parts of the body. Because it is attached to the left ventricle that is called a left ventricular assist device implantation.

Who Has  A Chance Of LVAD?

Doctors recommend an LVAD for certain patients with end-stage heart failure. In case the treatment option is right for you then the doctor will closely examine the patient’s health and also check the past medical history.

Because left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation is not a good option for all heart patients. When you have a medical condition, like kidney failure, clotting problems, lung disease, liver disease, or any infections, then you are not the right candidate for LVAD.

How Does It Work?

As we told your one end of the LVAD is attached to the left ventricle, and the other end will connect to the aorta (aorta is the main artery).

Once the blood flows through the heart into the LVAD then it continuously pumps blood to the other body parts.

There are various types of LVADs available and all are portable, but each mechanical pump normally has four main parts:

  • HEART PUMP: It is connected to the left side of the patient’s heart and moves the blood from the heart to the other body parts.

  • BATTERIES: It also comes with batteries when the system is not plugged into an outlet then it provides power from batteries.

  • DRIVELINE: A cable is also involved. This cable transfers information and power between the controller and the heart pump.

  • CONTROLLER: This controller power and checks the pump and driveline. It also provides alerts on how the system is working.

The surgeon will place the LVAD inside the body. From the upper part of the abdomen and the abdomen with the driveline is connected to the pump.

And a tube is coming out of the abdominal wall to the outside of the patient’s body and this tube is attached by the surgeon to the controller and pump’s battery.

After some time the LVAD battery is low, then alarm sounds to let you know that you need to change the battery. There are two power sources always connected to the controller. After one battery is low there is another battery available to power the LVAD for several hours.

LVAD Takes The Place Of Your Heart!

A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation does not take place of the heart. In simple language, it is a mechanical pump (LVAD) that receives blood from the left ventricle and supply it to the aorta. LVAD pumps blood along with the patient’s own heart. It helps the left ventricle pump blood.

Is The LVAD Can Be Used In Two Ways!

Yes, there are two ways to use the LVAD and this decision is taken by the doctor.

  • Bridge to transplant: Many heart failure patients are waiting for a heart donor, in case a donor is not available then LVAD is the best option. LVAD allows the heart and other body parts to rest and grow stronger. BTT depends on the blood type, and body size, and current medical condition of the patient.

  • Destination therapy: All patients are not good candidates for a heart transplant and other heart treatment so the LVAD provides long-term support for patients. Destination therapy helps to improve the quality of life and also supports a healthy heart.

Are There Any Tests To Eligible for LVAD?

Before undergoing the LVAD doctor will suggest any of these several tests. It includes:

  • Electrocardiogram (EKG)

  • Echocardiogram

  • Chest x-ray

  • Left and right heart catheterization

  • Routine blood work

  • Carotid and peripheral

  • Ultrasounds

The doctor also recommends regular health screenings such as colonoscopy or mammogram and a psychosocial/psychiatric evaluation. After checking the tests reports they will decide you are a good candidate or not.

Surgery For LVAD

Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation needs open-heart surgery. The surgeon will give general anesthesia, and they will small incision below your chest and also open the chest bone to reach the heart and attach the LVAD. During the procedure, a heart-lung bypass machine is used to supply oxygen-rich blood to other parts of the body. A ventilator will help the patient in breathing during the procedure. Once the LVAD is placed the incision is closed by the surgeon.
