How to Prevent Hypoglycemia?

 

If you have diabetes, there are some ways you can prevent hypoglycemia include:

 

  • Follow the meal plan

 

  • Eat at least three evenly spaced meals each day with between-meal snacks as prescribed.

 

  • Plan the meals no more than 4 to 5 hours apart.

 

  • Exercise at least 30 minutes to 1 hour after meals. Check the sugar level before and after exercise, and discuss with the doctor what types of changes can be made.

 

  • Double-check the insulin and dose of diabetes medicine before taking it.

 

  • If you drink alcohol, be moderate and monitor the blood sugar levels.

 

  • Know when your medicine is at its peak level.

 

  • Test your blood sugar as often as directed by your doctor.

 

  • Try to carry an identification bracelet which says that you have diabetes.

 

How is Hypoglycemia Treated?

 

 

If you have diabetes and you also have symptoms of hypoglycemia, then you should check your blood glucose level right away. If it’s low, you should eat or drink something which will quickly raise the blood sugar. For mild to moderate hypoglycemia, you need to consume at least 15 grams of carbohydrates, such as 4 glucose tablets, 5 or 6 pieces of dark chocolate a cup of milk, 4 ounces of orange juice, or 6 ounces of regular (not diet) soda. Wait 15 minutes and retest the blood glucose level. If it is still low, then you should consume another 15 grams of carbohydrates again.

 

 

If it is not corrected right away, it can immediately get worsen. You may become very confused and unable to manage the condition. In some cases, you may even lose consciousness, have a seizure, or go into a coma.

The treatment of the underlying condition of hypoglycemia may include:

 

Medications:  If a medication is the cause of the hypoglycemia, then the doctor will likely advise changing the medication or adjusting the dosage.

 

Tumor treatment:  A tumor in the pancreas is treated by surgical removal of the tumor. In such cases, partial removal of the pancreas is necessary.

 

 

Hypoglycemia Diet

 

In low blood sugar, there’s a diet which you should follow such as:

 

Breakfast: 1 paneer sandwich with  1 glass of milk/egg in any form /potato sandwich. 1 A cup of milk with jaggery powder /fresh orange juice with 2 toast

 

Before lunch:  buttermilk / fruits chaat / any 1 fruit/ 1 cup black coffee / lemon water

 

Lunch -multigrain roti / paneer/ green veg / roasted chicken /salad /whole wheat item / brown rice pulao

 

Snacks: 1 cup of coffee with 1 tsp of sugar with digestive bis / roasted channa / roasted bajra / handful of nuts with milk/ 1 cup coffee with glucose bis (2-3)

 

Dinner: Multigrain roti/grilled fish /Tuna fish / baked potato veg /paneer tikka/brown bread with veg / sauteed veg

Post Dinner: Have milk with jaggery powder
