In a statement Dr. Wael Jaber, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study said that “Being unfit on a treadmill or in an exercise stress test has a worse prognosis, as far as death, than being hypertensive, being diabetic or being a current smoker. We’ve never seen something as pronounced and objective as this.“
The study says, “Cardiorespiratory fitness is inversely associated with long-term mortality with no observed upper limit of benefit. Extremely high aerobic fitness was associated with the greatest survival and was associated with benefit in older patients and those with hypertension.”
The study explains that people should take being unfit or not exercising to be as strong a risk factor for ill health as hypertension, smoking, and diabetes. The study also states that being unfit should be treated almost like a disease which has a medicine called exercise which means that not exercising regularly is more harmful to your health than smoking.
