An intention to be readily prepared for medical emergency considering the recent outbreak of coronavirus, as many as 1,789 passengers underwent thermal screening. Passengers who underwent thermal screening at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, among them, 2 who had traveled to China, have been admitted to civic-run Kasturba Hospital in Chinchpokali.

An official said, 2 persons who returned from China have been kept under medical observation for possible exposure to the novel coronavirus which has infected a large number of people in the neighboring country.

A health department official said, as of now there are no cases of the deadly infection that have been detected through these screening efforts. He said, “No passenger was found positive (for the virus) during thermal scanning with history of a visit to Wuhan city of China in the last 14 days.”

The first case was reported in Wuhan, the capital of central Chinas Hubei province.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has created an isolation ward at its Kasturba hospital in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Dr. Padmaja Keskar an executive health officer of the BMC said, “The isolation ward has been created for diagnosis and treatment of persons suspected to have the coronavirus infection.”

The two suspects under observation have a mild cough and exhibited cold-related symptoms. Further details about the persons kept under observation are still awaited.

If noted any symptoms of the coronavirus in travelers returning from China, the doctors at the Mumbai international airport have been asked to send them to the isolation ward.

Keskar said, “All private doctors in the city have been asked to alert us (the BMC) if they observe symptoms of the coronavirus in anyone who has returned from China.”

Detailed instructions from the Maharashtra government have been received about the coronavirus and how to deal with the illness, said a source from Kasturba Hospital. Further, they have been instructed to strictly follow those instructions.
